Folding roof

Since we like the feeling of camping in nature, and after good experiences with the old truck, we opted once again for a folding roof. When the weather is fair, we sleep in the tent on top. With its dimensions of 200x180cm, one could call the bed upstairs, yes, an island. Other advantages are that there is no need to break up the bed every morning and that we don’t lose space downstairs for the benefit of a (semi)permanent bed. When the weather is cold or wet, or when the environment is too noisy, the sitting area can be converted into a bed of similar dimensions. Indeed, another island of 200×185/165cm.

A fixed roof tent results in an extra room as soon as one finds a quiet camping spot

The result is a still compact vehicle, that allows us to tackle small tracks and mountainous roads, almost like any other 4×4, as long as the height does not prevent passage. Indeed, thick branches or low overhanging rocks could stop us, but, in practice, they rarely do.

Hmm, indeed, that railway bridge in Georgia was a bit tight. Solution: a detour of 60 km or simply deflating the tyres. Guess what we did…

Another aspect to take into account due to the height of the vehicle is the risk of tipping. Nevertheless, as you can see on the photo below, the truck seems to be very well balanced. Despite how it looks, this situation didn’t feel too scary. All the heavy stuff is situated close to the chassis, and what we carry in the upper half of the cabin is almost nothing else than… local air.
